Vegetable lubricants may be refined from every seed and "nut" known to man. Every seed has its own particular set of chemicals and properties. Vegetable oils have almost unlimited uses, including paints, skin care and unlimited health related products. They usually are highly biodegradable and non-toxic. Oils and "fats" are derived from existing life forms-animal, vegetable and mineral. Animal fat oils were commonly used to enhance machining early in the Industrial Revolution-and probably before that time. Sperm oil, also known as whale oil; was soon recognized as a superior machining lubricant. Rancidity is a common problem related to any animal oil. The use of whale oil is, of course, not legal today.
