Rethinking the Use of Water
From the Corner Office - by Wally Boelkins, President UNIST, Inc.
Why use water?
A high percentage of metalforming fluids are water-
based, using water at 3% to 50% concentration
ratios. Why is a lubricant mixed with water?
Normally it is because there has not been a way to
apply small amounts of a neat (or straight) lubricant.
Oils never have, and never will mix with water, so an
emulsifier is always required. Since water will
corrode, a rust inhibitor must also be added. Then,
of course, there are countless varieties of water,
which can adversely affect the fluid. So why use
water?

Optimizing Pressroom Lubrication
Uni-Roller / SPR 2000 Caps Efficiency Project

evaluated his entire fluid handling and application
process. Among many opportunities to reduce cost
he found that his spray application method was
causing significant waste and clean up issues. When
the project was complete he found as much as 600
gallons per month of lube had been finding its way to
somewhere else besides on the part or the tooling
where it was needed to reduce friction and heat build
up.
