Case Study

MQL keeps Texas manufacturer drilling

Unist Case Study

Overview

Priefert Manufacturing, based in Mt. Pleasant, Texas, is one of the world’s largest producers of farm, ranch, and rodeo equipment. Their reputation for quality and efficiency is built on continually improving production processes. In their current production process, Priefert drills over 1,200 holes per hour through 16-22 gauge steel on a new production line.

Problem

Priefert’s production line faced a critical issue: while drilling at 1,000 RPM, the motors frequently stalled, preventing the line from reaching its target output of 1,200+ 1-inch diameter holes per hour. The heat and friction generated during drilling not only slowed down production but also risked damaging equipment and increasing maintenance costs. Priefert needed a reliable, efficient solution to keep the drills running smoothly, boost productivity, and maintain the high-quality standards expected in their manufacturing process.

Solution

Optimized for Priefert’s manufacturing process, Unist designed a custom configured 6 outlet Serv-O-Spray system. By integrating independent actuation control to each pump, a precise amount of discrete air atomized lubrication can be applied to individual cutting tools. Flexible plastic nozzles with stainless steel tips direct the air atomized lubricant to the tool, while the positive displacement pumps reliably deliver the fluid with each cycle. This solution allows the operator to produce multiple product configurations with maximum control, flexibility, and minimal waste.

Results

Two years after installation, Priefert is an avid proponent of Unist’s Serv-O-Spray system and Coolube® lubrication. Taking advantage of minimum quantity lubrication, each of their pumps has been adjusted to apply less than 1/30th mL of Coolube® per hole. While drilling 1,200 holes per hour on average, Priefert consumes approximately half a gallon of Coolube® 2210EP per week. All the while, maintaining a clean work environment and experiencing exceptional drill performance.
