Decreasing Metal Forming Lubricant Use

Since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution about 200 years ago, humans have constantly sought better ways to enhance the shaping and forming of metal. Many oils, including sperm oil and lard, were used to improve machining operations. More recently, water soluble oils and synthetic coolants formulated to reduce dermatitis and other operator problems have come into wide use. However, using massive amounts of treated water in stamping and pressworking operations raises some environmental concerns.
